Our Learning

In Year 2 we read a range of exciting texts in English, learn our 2-, 5- and 10-times tables and related division facts, study a range of different artists in art, investigate animals and living things and different materials in science, and that’s just for starters!

In Early Years and Key Stage One we use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised to teach phonics and early reading. We continue to have daily phonics lessons that later in Year 2 become spelling, grammar and punctuation lessons. We also continue to use the reading elements of Little Wandle to develop fluency, comprehension and prosody.

To support our learning throughout the year, we use ‘Spelling Shed’, an online learning platform, to secure children’s spelling and develop vocabulary and ‘Times Tables Rock Stars’, another online learning tool, to help secure the children’s multiplication and division facts.

We also use ‘Accelerated Reader’ (AR), a system which allows children to take comprehension quizzes on their reading books, to monitor and support reading. You can track your child’s AR quiz scores by signing up to ‘Renaissance Home Connect’.

More information about our Year 2 curriculum for individual subjects can be found on our subject curriculum pages and in our termly Learning Letters, links to which are included below.
